You reach the maximum of 80 % with three components: basic funding (30 %) + early-replacement bonus (16 %, for replacing an old gas boiler) + income bonus (taxable household income up to €40,000). On a 21.000 € system that comes to 16.800 € in grants – and because the price sits entirely below the 28.000 € ceiling, the subsidy applies to every euro of it. Why a heat pump

Heat independently – and save while you do

A heat pump turns one kilowatt-hour of electricity into roughly three and a half kilowatt-hours of heat. That cuts your heating bill for good and frees you from gas and oil prices.

Around €925 less per year

Useful heat from a heat pump costs about 6.9 ct/kWh; from gas it is 11 to 15 ct/kWh. Over 20 years that adds up to a five-figure sum.

In the first quarter of 2026 the heat pump was, for the first time, the best-selling heating system in Germany – with a 48.7 % market share. This is no niche bet.

Funktionsweise

Wie holt eine Wärmepumpe Wärme aus kalter Luft?

Sie erzeugt keine Wärme, sie transportiert vorhandene – wie ein Kühlschrank, nur andersherum. Scrollen Sie einmal durch den Kältemittel-Kreislauf: vier Stationen, in denen aus 15 °C kalter Luft 70 °C heißes Gas werden.

  1. Wärme aufnehmen

    Ein Ventilator zieht Außenluft über den Verdampfer. Auch Luft von −15 °C ist noch rund 258 Grad wärmer als der absolute Nullpunkt – sie steckt voller Energie. Genau die sammelt die Wärmepumpe ein, statt Wärme wie ein Kessel erst aus Brennstoff erzeugen zu müssen.

  2. Verdampfen

    Im Verdampfer steht das Kältemittel unter nur 4 bar. Bei diesem Druck siedet es schon bei etwa −20 °C – deutlich unter der Außentemperatur. Die Luftwärme lässt es verdampfen: Aus Flüssigkeit wird Gas. Die Temperatur bleibt dabei fast gleich, die Energie steckt im Phasenwechsel.

  3. Verdichten

    Jetzt der einzige Punkt, an dem Strom fließt: Der Kompressor presst das Gas auf rund 26 bar zusammen. Verdichten heißt erwärmen – die Temperatur schnellt auf bis zu 70 °C. Aus weit verteilter Umweltwärme wird nutzbare Heiztemperatur.

  4. Wärme abgeben

    Im Verflüssiger gibt das heiße Gas seine Wärme an Heizkreis und Warmwasser ab und wird dabei selbst wieder flüssig. Zum Schluss entspannt das Expansionsventil es zurück auf 4 bar, es kühlt schlagartig auf −20 °C ab – und der Kreislauf beginnt von vorn. Strom braucht nur der Kompressor: Aus 1 kWh werden so 3 bis 4 kWh Wärme.

Deshalb ist die Wärmepumpe keine Stromheizung: Der Kompressor ist der einzige Verbraucher, den Rest liefert die Umwelt gratis. Aus 1 kWh Strom werden im Feld im Schnitt 3,4 kWh Wärme.

How a heat pump works

A heat pump works like a fridge in reverse: it draws heat from its surroundings and lifts it to heating temperature.

Take in heat

A fan draws in outside air. Even at minus 15 °C it still holds usable heat energy.

The heat passes into a refrigerant, which evaporates even at very low temperatures.

Compress

A compressor compresses the vapour. The pressure rises – and with it the temperature, up to 70 °C.

The heat passes into your heating circuit and hot water. Then the cycle starts again.

That is the seasonal performance factor measured in the field by Fraunhofer ISE for air-source heat pumps – ground-source reaches 4.3. The lower the flow temperature, the higher the figure and the cheaper your heating.

Whether your radiators are up to it, or a few need replacing, the installer tells you after the heat-load calculation – free of charge and before you decide anything.

What does a heat pump really cost?

The list price is rarely the price you pay. What matters is what is left after the subsidy – and how far apart the quotes are.

Worked example: detached house

Air-to-water heat pump at entry-level price, 140 m² of living space, replacing a 22-year-old gas boiler, owner-occupied, with the income bonus (household income up to €50,000) – not a best case, but the normal case. Terms from 21.07.2026.

An illustrative calculation. Because the price sits entirely below the €28,000 ceiling, every euro is eligible – on a €31,000 system, €3,000 of it is yours to carry in full. If your household income is under €40,000 the grant rises to 76 % and your contribution falls to about €5,040; without the income bonus, 46 % remains and about €11,340.

The most common type, with roughly 95 % market share. No groundworks; sited in the garden or against the house wall. Real seasonal performance factor: 3.4. At the lower end of the range the whole price sits below the subsidy ceiling.

The highest efficiency (SPF 4.3) and the lowest running costs, but a borehole or ground collector is needed – adding €5,000 to €10,000.

Zuschuss gesamt 56 % = 11.760 € · Eigenanteil 9.240 €. Voraussetzung: Austausch einer mindestens 20 Jahre alten Gasheizung (Klima-Bonus) und zu versteuerndes Haushaltseinkommen bis 50.000 € (Einkommens-Bonus). Weil der Preis vollständig unter dem Förderdeckel von 28.000 € liegt, ist jeder Euro förderfähig – bei teureren Anlagen ist er das nicht. Mit Haushaltseinkommen unter 40.000 € steigt der Zuschuss auf 76 %.

Amortisation im Jahr 9Ab dort hat die Wärmepumpe insgesamt weniger gekostet als die Gasheizung, die weiterläuft – das ist der markierte Punkt im Diagramm. Wie schnell es geht, hängt am Gaspreis: Steigt er stark, ist es rund ein Jahr früher so weit, bleibt er flach, rund ein Jahr später. Stand ohnehin ein Heizungstausch an, rechnet sich die Wärmepumpe deutlich eher – dann zählt nur der Aufpreis gegenüber einer neuen Gasheizung.

Annahmen: Betrieb der Wärmepumpe 1.400 € pro Jahr – die Mitte der Spanne 1.000 € bis 1.800 € (140 m², JAZ 3,4, Wärmepumpen-Stromtarif 24–30 ct/kWh). Diese Annahme verschiebt beide Kurven gleichermassen; der Schnittpunkt hängt allein an der Ersparnis von ca. 925 € pro Jahr, die sich über 20 Jahre auf 19.100 € bis 25.100 € summiert. Nutzwärme: Wärmepumpe ca. 6,9 ct/kWh gegenüber Gas 11,2–14,8 und Öl 13,9–16,8 ct/kWh.

Common questions about heat pumps

Exactly how large is the subsidy in 2026?

Since 21.07.2026 the rules are: 30 % basic funding, plus a 16 % early-replacement bonus for taking out an old fossil-fuel system, plus an income-tiered bonus of 40 % (up to €30,000), 30 % (up to €40,000) or 10 % (up to €50,000 taxable household income). The maximum rate is 80 % of at most €28,000 in eligible costs, so €22,400. The efficiency bonus and the emissions-reduction supplement have been discontinued. With all three components, owner-occupiers reach the maximum – we check in advance which ones count for you.

Is a heat pump worth it in an older building?

In most cases, yes. What decides it is not the year of construction but the flow temperature required. Below 55 °C a heat pump runs economically. Often it is enough to fit larger radiators in a few rooms. The installer establishes this during the on-site heat-load calculation.

Do I absolutely need underfloor heating?

No. Underfloor heating is ideal because it works at low flow temperatures. But modern high-temperature heat pumps reach up to 70 °C and work with conventional radiators too.

How loud is an air-source heat pump?

Current units run at roughly 35 to 50 dB(A) at three metres – comparable to a quiet fridge. At night, residential areas require 35 dB(A) at the neighbour's window. The installer checks the siting and demonstrates compliance.

When does the investment pay for itself?

With a contribution of around €9,000, realistically after 6 to 9 years. At a saving of roughly €925 a year against gas the investment is back by then – later with a smaller subsidy and a larger contribution, sooner with a higher income bonus.

Is the comparison really free?

How long does installation take?

Commission from the firm

If a job goes ahead between you and a partner firm, that firm pays us a placement commission. You pay nothing.

It does not make your price higher

Partners fund the commission out of the sales costs they save – a placed job costs them less than one they win themselves. That is precisely why the model works.

No pay-to-rank

Paying more does not get a firm suggested more often. Selection is by region, trade and free capacity – otherwise the comparison would be worthless, and with it our whole offering.

What that means for you: We only earn if you are happy with what you sign at the end. A quote you regret afterwards costs us the partnership with that firm – which is why we also tell you when a project does not add up right now.
